If you look closely you can spot a lot of visual similarities between Blood Orange‘s “Chamakay”, the lead single on his upcoming Cupid Deluxe,  and Solange‘s “Losing You”, one of the songs that shot Dev Hynes to a new level of prominence as a songwriter and producer: international settings, idiosyncratic fashions, plenty of dancing. Here, Hynes enlisted Chairlift vocalist Caroline Polachek and decamped to his ancestral home of Guyana for a beautifully produced, overcast duet.

There’s nothing in this song but a bunch of hazy synths and washed out bass. It’s up to Hynes and Polachek to lift this track up with their emotional duet singing. Much of that work is already pulled off by Hynes’ songwriting skills. His brilliant production takes Polachek’s beautiful voice and enfolds it among the bass and the synths, showcasing his keen ear for space, without drowning it. All in all, this track is a brilliant head start on his new album.
