Autre Ne Veut – Play by Play

Title: Play by Play

Artist: Autre Ne Veut

Album: Anxiety

Year: 2013

Genre: Electronic, Contemporary R&B

This song is ecstatic from start to finish. It’s only just the intro and Arthur Ashin, aka Autre Ne Veut, is already shouting like it’s the last thing he’s ever going to say “Baby, all alone I need you now”. What? Yes, I said it’s just the intro don’t look so surprised. Ashin said he drew inspiration from Usher‘s hit “Climax”, and found his muse in R&B. Not that this is really R&B. It is actually, but at the same time it’s not. But his inspiration, “Play by Play” is all climax! At about two and a half minutes into the song it seems to reach its logical ending but then it just keeps going (reminding me  a bit of Prince‘s uncanny knack for basic consistent endings). The finale chorus, “I just called you up to get that play by play” goes on for half the song but when you listen to it it feels like it goes on forever (in a hypnotic good way). Quite romantic. Well his nickname does mean: “I want no other”.
