Iceage – Coalition

Title: Coalition

Artist: Iceage

Album: You’re Nothing

Year: 2013

Genre: Post-Punk, Noise Rock

“Coalition” reveals itself as a devastating admission of doubt and sexual identity: “Wants me to take her/ But blockades run through my veins/ Something denies coalition with you.” It’s easy to miss the impact of Ronnenfeldt’s words, as Iceage’s music grows thicker, bolder, and more major-key. But musically and physically, they’ve crept close enough to indulgence to realize it goes against their nature: Elias shouts, “Am I supposed give into anything?”, answering with a repeated “Excess! Excess! Excess!” at the song’s close. It’s a curse against losing control.
