Pictureplane – Goth Star

Almost two years on, Pictureplane now have a full-length on the calendar, Dark Rift, due August 4  from Lovepump United; “Goth Star”, taken from the album, captures some of that early magic. A Fleetwood Mac sample (“Seven Wonders”) is introduced, first in tiny pieces, then building gradually into not-quite-decipherable words. The processing on Stevie Nicks’ voice is simultaneously distant and intimate, setting the phrases loose in a vast echoing space but also bringing them closer. The bombastic emotion of the original vocal, even here, tweaked to an inch of its life, feels completely real. Surrounding the sample is a huge, glittery, lurching groove, basically commanding you to fall into line behind it. And it works: they’re back in my head again.  Mark Richardson. Pitchfork
